George Wyndham came from a family which appreciated good horses. His father took a keen interest and his cousin, George Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont, kept a famous stud, winning both the Oaks and Derby five times.

George imported a number of very good mares in the early 1840s, purchased most of the Glendon Stud when it was sold in 1847 and, with his sons, went on to develop a stud, first at Dalwood and then at Bukkulla, with over 300 broodmares.

Two of the most notable horses bred at Dalwood were Lauristina and Lunelle.

Lunelle, after a winning career, produced Luna (by Lord of the Hills), who produced A.T. (by Tarragon) and won the Sydney Cup in 1876. Luna also produced Calamia (by Maribyrnong) who won the Melbourne Cup in 1878.

Lauristina as a four-year old won a match race for one thousand pounds at Homebush in 1859 against Veno over a three mile course. Previously Veno had been declared "Champion Racehorse of Australia" after an Inter-Colonial Match Race at Flemington in 1858.

The Wyndhams were also major breeders of Walers for the Indian Army.
